The Power of Giving Tuesday: Building Community, Inspiring Donors, and Amplifying Impact

Giving Tuesday has become a global movement that nonprofits and donors alike look forward to every year!

Just think it’s far more than just a day for fundraising—it’s also a celebration of generosity that energizes donors and organizations alike. And, in these times, with all the changes on the horizon, energizing our donors is absolutely important!

Here’s why I believe Giving Tuesday is a wonderful opportunity for all nonprofits and why you should consider going all out this year.

1. It Brings Fun and Excitement to Fundraising

We’ve all been there —fundraising can sometimes feel like a grind. Especially here at year-end.

Giving Tuesday breaks the humdrum by because it’s injecting energy, enthusiasm, and even playfulness into the process. Just think how wonderful it is to be able to add a note of fun into our hard work raising money.

The buzz around the day is contagious, making it a joy for both donors and staff. (Hurray!)

We like to approach #GT as a day to celebrate generosity and rally together around your mutually shared purpose and goals. What a wonderful way to expand support and engage your donors!

2. It Adds a Competitive Spirit

Giving Tuesday also introduces an element of gamification that I absolutely love.

Watching donation totals climb in real-time, setting ambitious goals, and maybe even sparking a little friendly competition among teams can make the day such fun. (I love adding competition to fundraising teams.)

This approach motivates people to give more generously and creates a sense of camaraderie that’s hard to beat.

3. A Unique Opportunity for Major Donors

Many people think Giving Tuesday is just for small gifts, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity to engage your major donors.

There are many ways your top donors can help. You can ask them for matching gift challenges, and to serve as campaign ambassadors. Just consider the power of their social networks if they are sharing your story. That’s a peer-to-peer endorsement if I’ve ever seen one.

Don’t forget this chance to strengthen relationships with your most important key stakeholders. This is something you want always, correct? Keep your donors close!

4. Building Community and Connection

Giving Tuesday is a time when everyone—donors, staff, volunteers, and supporters—can come together around a common goal. Remember, we don’t often have this opportunity to pull everyone together.

When people have a shared experience by participating in a global day of giving, it can strengthen bonds among everyone, and build a greater sense of community with your supporters. Again, this is something we all want to create.

5. Telling Your Story to a Captive Audience

This day offers an ideal platform to spread the word, tell your story, and showcase your organization’s impact.

Giving Tuesday allows you to reach new audiences who just might be open to supporting your organization. Just consider all that social sharing that happens when volunteers reach out to their friends, promoting your cause.

We all know that it’s a time when people are actively searching for causes to support, so take advantage of all the conversations and energy to tell your story.

BOTTOM LINE: Giving Tuesday is more than just a day to raise money.

It’s a celebration of generosity, a chance to have fun, and an opportunity to connect with donors in meaningful ways.

So this year, we hope you will go all out. Plan something exciting, involve your biggest supporters, and use the day to rally your community around the work you do.
