5 Ways Nonprofit Fundraisers Can Treat Themselves in the New Year

Nonprofit Self-Care 5 Tips for 2025 | GPG

As the holiday season fades away and we step into a brand-new, fresh year, it’s time to reflect, reset, and recharge.

For everyone in the nonprofit world, and especially people on fundraising teams, the end-of-year push can be emotionally and physically draining.

That’s why NOW is the perfect moment to focus on self-care. Taking care of yourself isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity to keep doing the selfless and transformative work that changes lives.

Here are my five favorite ways to treat yourself in the new year:

1. Take a Breath and Reflect

Just consider the incredible impact you’ve had over the past year. Can you take time to acknowledge yourself and appreciate what you’ve accomplished?

I think so many people don’t take the time to reflect and acknowledge themselves. How about creating a quiet moment to celebrate your wins, no matter how big or small? Can you write them down?

Reflection is often the first step to recharging yourself.

2. Schedule Time Just for You

How about blocking out a day (or even just a few hours) for yourself?

You can use this time to do something that truly brings you joy—a long walk in the woods, reading a great book, enjoying the arts or crafting. You can even binge your favorite show guilt-free!

Protect this private time fiercely. It’s the ultimate self-care if you ask me!

3. Set Boundaries That Stick

Can you make this the year you embrace saying “no” to things that drain you?

Are there unnecessary meetings or too many after-hours emails in your life? When you set firm boundaries, you have time to focus on the important things: your interests, your energy, and your well-being.

4. Find Your Recharge Ritual

Kathrine Gamble loves her morning tea with her toast. I enjoy my morning coffee in my favorite comfy chair while watching birds at the birdfeeder before my morning meditation practice.

What do you do to rest and recharge? This might be a morning workout or walk, writing in your journal, or simply enjoying a hot cup of tea without distractions.

Small rituals can make a big difference.

5. Invest in Personal Growth

Yes, the new year is a wonderful time to tackle something new.

Where do you want to grow or expand your skill set in the coming year? Attend a workshop? Read a book about a topic you’ve always wanted to explore?

Investing in yourself helps you show up as your best self for your organization and your donors.

You can also consider bringing your team to our 2025 Major Gifts Intensive, to add structure, accountability and metrics to your major gift program and close many more gifts.

BOTTOM LINE: Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential.

When you’re at your best, you can bring your best to the causes and communities you serve. Let’s make 2025 a fantastic year!
